Blushing all wrong? Here's why!

Blushing all wrong? Here's why!

To go warm or to be cool. That is the question. Whether ’tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of one blush color all your life or to switch things up?

What should blush be doing for you?

Blush should give your cheeks a youthful glow. It can also add dimension to your face.

Blush should NOT

look like a rash

distract away from your features

require additional makeup to pull off

If you are finding that you have to really work to make a color work, STOP.

Why is your blush looking off?

You are applying it wrong or over the wrong products

You are using the wrong color

You are not coordinating your look

You aren’t using the appropriate season saturation

WARM OR COOL?

First off, understand that when we say warm we always mean RED unless we mean ORANGE heh.

RED = Power

ORANGE = Strength and only applies to S45, S42, S21 (cool skin, read this article about skin)

When we say cool for now on we always mean MAGENTA unless we mean PURPLE

MAGENTA = Ambition

PURPLE = Creativity and only applies to C41

This conversation is very ebhues heavy, if you don’t know your ebhues codes that is fine, but I definitely recommend finding them out so you can know how your colors specifically apply, especially with the recommendations at the end.

Questions to ask yourself in order to decide your blush color

What color is my lip?

Do I have existing redness in my cheeks?

What do I want my look to ‘say’

LIP COORDINATION

Coordinating your cheeks to your lip is super easy using ebhues and/or elea blake cosmetics. On our website, you can search the lip color or cheek you have and see the ebhues code. Then all you have to do is search that code for coordinating looks.

For example, lets say your favorite lip is Sly. You can see Sly has the ebhues code of P11ddo. You can either click the P11 at the bottom or type it in search or type in P11d to narrow your options etc. The most important part of the code is the first letter and the number after it (P11 in this case).

Power lips always look cute with power blush.

Ambition lips always look cute with ambition blush.

Strength lips always look cute with strength blush.

Creativity lips always look cute with creativity blush.

Creativity lips also always look cute with ambition blush, and often look cute with strength blush when you have warm colors on your eyes.

Strength blush can really be used for any look (depending on your eye look) as it is the most natural you can go

Can you switch that up? Sure! But do it with your outfit in mind. Try looking at the colors you are wearing and consider what a color pairing means. More on that later…

REDNESS IN CHEEKS

Are your cheeks already 'blushy' under your foundation? Are they pinky? Look at your overtone on your cheeks…

Cool looking pinky tones - use Power or Strength colors

Warm looking almost rashy tones - use Ambition or Creativity colors

It doesn’t matter what is on your lips in this case, as long as your are aiming for a natural look. You’ll achieve that look and also feel more comfortable because you won’t be self conscious that your blush is undoing your foundation’s work.

HOW DO I WANT TO BE PERCEIVED

Different color combinations have different feelings.

Ambition colors = ambitious, cute

Power colors = powerful, sexy

Strength colors = strong, vibrant, beachy

Creativity colors = artsy and 'egirl'

SATURATION IN THE SEASON

Unless you are like me and stay pretty much the same value throughout the year, you will have your winter/fall blushes and your summer/spring blushes (with some crossover). Just like Bronzer decisions, season and value are going to factor into your decisions. You'll still be the same undertones, but your saturation WILL change.

In terms of color I don’t think any season is really warm vs cool especially if you don’t really have seasons where you live, but in general…

Winter = Power, Creativity

Fall = Strength, Power, Creativity

Spring = Ambition, Creativity, Power, Strength

Summer = Ambition, Creativity, Strength, Power

I say Power in Spring and Summer because coral is often a power color and appears in those trends frequently

HOW TO APPLY

We definitely recommend using a light touch for rich blushes and a cheek contour brush for light blushes. You will also want to be mindful of your face shape

IS BLUSH REALLY FOR ME?

Another misconception I hear is that Black women or POC don’t wear blush, I can assure you that they absolutely do. In fact, they were the inventors of blush WAY back in the day. The deeper your skin is, the more saturation in your color you will want. Bold colors will look lovely and natural for you. That isn’t to say fair girls can’t also pull off bold blush, because I love blush, but just that it will look less natural and more made up.

Below are the blushes for each space. Want to know your bests in each color group? Do one of our DIY drapes or come in for a consult. You’ll be surprise what a difference the perfect shade makes for you. Some groups have more options. If you are uncertain which is right for you send us a message! Include a photo please if you haven't come in before. We require people to know their ebhues codes in order to make an accurate recommendation. Otherwise, we recommend the drape or ordering samples.
