Tailgating Tips

Whether you are a football fan or a fan of delicious snacks and hanging with friends, tailgating season is upon us and the South don’t play around. So in tying in with our football fashion segment appearing on News Channel 9, we wanted to create a blog of some of the top tips for those looking to dazzle this football season!

Look, while many of our clients aren’t in the South, the thing is… we are. There are many stereotypes about the South, not all of them flattering, but there is one truth to those tired ole tropes, we like our football. Football season is exciting for the games, the spirit, and the camaraderie of rooting for your favorite team and against your rivals but more importantly it is all about that tailgate party.

Whether you are a football fan or a fan of delicious snacks and hanging with friends, tailgating season is upon us and the South don’t play around. So in tying in with our football fashion segment appearing on News Channel 9, we wanted to create a blog of some of the top tips for those looking to dazzle this football season!

1. In the South, looking stylish for a tailgating party is a must.

While college t-shirts, face paint, and football jerseys are all well and dandy – nothing sets you apart like opting out of the expected and instead choosing classy team colors for your look. There is no need to look like a parade float to show your spirit, instead choose one main color from your team and wear it in comfortable and casual dresses, skirts, or blouses. Use the secondary color as an accent only in your jewelry, shoes, or even makeup.

For specific school spirit items, keep it simple – a pin on your shirt or dress that says the name or a necklace with your mascot hanging from it is all you need when you are wearing your colors stylishly!

To sassy Vols chic.

For men, get creative with pull overs, patterns, and bow ties to bring some style to the tailgating scene.

2. Heels are great, but be realistic.

Tailgate parties often involve a lot of walking, sometimes on grass. If you can’t walk in heels for hours without limping then leave them behind. If you can, stick with heels that are wedges or thicker than stilettos to avoid punching holes in the grass – you aren’t there to aerate the grass. Just keep in mind that football season occurs during a season where one moment can be warm and lovely and the next cold and rainy, so keep your footwear realistic.

3. Natural Makeup with a team spirit POP!

The event is casual and while we know casual is different for everyone, there is no need to go over the top with your makeup. We recommend a soft natural look with a cat eye or liner in your team color – or even better lipstick in your team color if applicable. If your team color is not YOUR color, consult with an elea blake Colorista to find a color that would work for you that also screams team spirit!

4. Accessorize with hats and glasses.

Sunglasses with your team color are the perfect way to protect those eyes from the sun while you cheer on your team. Similarly so are hats, floppy hats in the warmer part of the season speak to that southern charm while bomber hats, bucket hats, or even vintage fedoras give a little flair in the winter.

5. Don’t forget sunscreen!

No matter who you are cheering for, no one looks good with a sunburn. Make sure to protect your skin from the sun by wearing your sunscreen!

6. Bring that touch up kit.

Hey, even if the best of us gets a little messy eating tailgate food. Make sure you bring a touch-up kit of your lip color and some soften (with a tiny brush) for your tailgating party so you can stay fresh and stylish the whole day!
